July 21, 2021

We head north to the Nebraska/South Dakota border to visit the quaint and charming town of Yankton. First, stop is the National Field Archery Association where we learn about this world-class facility along with seeing a marksman practice their shooting. The facility was to host the 2020 WORLD Field Championship. We will learn about the possibility of the championship returning post-Covid.

Next, we stop is lunch at famous JoDean's Steakhouse, a local favorite. Its comfortable dining room is filled with Midwestern artifacts and has a super friendly staff that will treat you like family. JoDean's is known for its whopping 50-foot buffet full of everyone's home-cooked favorites. JoDean's was voted South Dakota's best buffet and has been family-owned since 1971.

Next, we tour the Mead Cultural Education Center. It is located in a recently renovated Neo-Renaissance building built in 1909 for the Dakota Hospital for the Insane. It is home to the Dakota Territorial Museum as well as the new Lewis and Clark Journeying Forward exhibit which features one of the most extensive looks at the Lewis and Clark's Corps of Discovery Journey from beginning to end. The exhibit also highlights the impact on the Native Americans they encountered. Filled with a rich history of its own and historical artifacts from the Dakota Territory, this breathtaking building and the preserved pieces of our past within is a must-see.

We hope to round out the afternoon at the Bishop Marty Memorial Chapel. (They hope to be open by June for visitors.) The Chapel is considered one of the country's best examples of Gothic architecture. It's been a Yankton landmark since 1950.

We round out the afternoon with a drive across the Lewis & Clark Dam with a scenic picture stop. A stop will be made on the way home for dinner (on your own) before we return home.
