Welcome to Henderson! The first stop of the day will be the Henderson Mennonite Heritage Museum and Park, where tantalizing, freshly-baked apple prieska will be awaiting your arrival. Filled with flavorful apple slices, carefully tucked into a flakey, sugar-glazed crust, this Mennonite pastry is like your own personal piece of Anabaptist apple pie.
After an enlightening history on the story of the Mennonite faith, you will be given guided storytelling tours while meandering through the park's many historical buildings. Docents, some of who are direct descendants of the first immigrants, will share unique personal stories of the struggles they encountered when immigrating from Russia to Henderson and settling on the plains of Nebraska for religious freedom.
Faspa meals became a tradition among Mennonites long ago and were served to visiting guests on Sunday afternoons. Your faspa will be served in the park's new Irrigation and Agricultural building and will consist of Henderson's locally processed ring bologna, fresh round cheese, sweet "wedding" pickles, and a variety of salads, including Marj's famous potato salad. An assortment of local jams and jellies will be available to spread onto freshly-baked zwieback, which is perfectly formed, double-decker Mennonite yeast rolls. They are to a favorite!
Let's not forget dessert. Adopted from their Ukrainian roots, Mennonite New Year's cookies are glazed, yeast-raised donut fritters, filled with plump, juicy raisins. Traditionally served the first day of January to celebrate the new year, Heritage Park visitors will be treated to these melt-in-your-mouth treats any time of the year.
After playing the fun and enlightening game known as, "Name the Famous Mennonite," your next stop will offer a time of relation at Henderson's Bethesda Mennonite Church. Along with enjoying traditional hymns, an unforgettable musical performance will resonate from their 2,750-pipe organ, as if the gates of heaven have opened. Next will be the opportunity to experience the breathtaking view of their stained-glass windows, depicting scenes of Jesus' life. What better way to enjoy the afternoon than with a stop at the final resting place of some of Henderson's immigrants buried at Bethesda's Mennonite Cemetery. Here you will be given the chance to experience reenacted stories of these spiritual people. Performances alongside their graves will bring to life the hardships they encountered and enlighten you with many untold stories of the settlement of Nebraska in the 1870's. (Please bring a lawn chair with your name attached.) Refreshments will be served.
Before saying farewell to the dearly departed, grave dowsing techniques will be demonstrated, identifying locations of unmarked graves and clues to age and gender. Dowsing rods will be available for practicing different methods. Discover which techniques might work for you.
