This Amtrak route takes you through the heart of the Mississippi Delta to one of the most exciting cities in the country - New Orleans. Your journey begins in Chicago when you travel high atop the John Hancock Tower 1,000 feet above the famed "Magnificent Mile." Day 2

Amtrak through the Mississippi Delta/Evening at leisure

"Good morning America, how are you? Don't you know me I'm your native son; I'm the train they call the City of New Orleans, I'll be gone 500 miles when the day is done." Sit back, relax and let the scenery of the Mississippi Delta pass by your private compartment on your Amtrak sleeper car. Enjoy breakfast and lunch in the dining car as part of your tour and just relax as you hear the "wheels rumbling beneath the floor." By mid-afternoon arrive in New Orleans. Transfer to your French Quarter hotel where you'll spend four nights in the heart and excitement of New Orleans. The evening is yours at leisure.

Day 3

New Orleans City Tour/Steamboat Natchez Lunch Cruise/National WW II Museum/ Evening at Leisure

This morning your local guide will take you on a narrated historical city tour to include an above ground cemetery. Step back in time when you board an authentic steam paddle wheeler - The Natchez, for a cruise on the Mississippi River with a delicious lunch. This afternoon visit the National WW II Museum which tells the story of the American experience in the war that changed the world - why it was fought, how it was won, and what it means today. Included is the documentary film Beyond all Boundaries, narrated by Tom Hanks. It is a 4-D journey through the war that changed the world. Enjoy another evening at leisure - free to explore the French Quarter just as you choose.

B, L

Day 4

Louisiana Wetland and Coastal Environment Tour

There are so many interesting things that you'll see and do today that will put you in touch with the "natural side" of Southern Louisiana. Visit the Golden Medal Historical Center which offers an excellent overview of life in the golden meadow with a focus on the region's shrimping and oyster industries. Make your own shrimp and oyster net at Chine's Cajun Net Shop. It doesn't get any more experiential than this when you shuck oysters at Collins Oyster Company and learn how oyster and oyster pearls are formed. Enjoy lunch at Cher-Amie's Seafood Restaurant. Stop at the Crab Station to see first-hand how live Louisiana blue crabs are processed for shipment throughout the United States. Learn about the lost art of time-honored boat building through a hands-on learning experience at the Center for Traditional Louisiana Boat Building. Finally, take a swamp tour with Captain Clyde McCully while cruising the bayou des allemandes. Head back to New Orleans to "wash up" after your day's experiences before an evening at the elegant Court of Two Sisters restaurant.

B, L, D

Day 5

Lake Pontchartrain/Whitney Plantation/ Evening Culinary and Nightlife Tour

This morning drive over the Lake Pontchartrain Causeway which spans almost 24 miles across the vast Lake Pontchartrain. Visit the Whitney Plantation; the only plantation that tells the story of slaves in first person narrative with restored buildings, memorial artwork, and museum exhibits. Next head back to New Orleans to get primed for a fun evening ahead. On a walking tour with your expert guide stop at three "local cafés" each with a different sampling of Cajun and creole cuisine. Finish the night at the Palm Court Jazz Café housed in a fully restored early 19th century historic building in the French Quarter. The décor and theme of the jazz café reflects the elegance of old New Orleans. Musicians appearing at the Palm Court include some of the legends of New Orleans traditional jazz and you'll be a part of it.

B, D

Day 6

Mardi Gras World/Fly Home

This morning get an up-close and personal look at what it takes to bring Mardi Gras to life year after year at Mardi Gras World. See artists that build the floats from the ground up, the costumes that are so colorful, and learn the history of the unique festive tradition and much more. Then head home with fond memories of your trip.

B=Breakfast, L=Lunch, D=Dinner

This tour includes moderate physical activity. You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk reasonable distances.
