Day 2
Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home/ John Deere Historic Site/Ulysses S. Grant Home
It's a Presidential Day! Start off visiting the Ronald Reagan Boyhood Home in Dixon, IL. The Reagan Boyhood Home is most significant as the home of 40th U.S. President Ronald Reagan and his family from late 1920 until 1923. Reagan was nine years old at the time and in grade school. The time in Dixon was important in the president's formative years and he held many memories of his life lived there. Next visit the John Deere Historic Site where you'll hear the clang of the hammer and feel the heat from the forge as you watch iron melt and take shape. Stand in the spot where John Deere created the first commercially successful steel plow, and relive the experience of his original blacksmith shop. Then it's on to Galena, IL where you'll encounter history of our third presidential visit, the Ulysses S. Grant Home. This is where the 18th President retired after the Civil War before becoming president in 1868. Your hotel is strategically located in the heart of quaint downtown Galena.
Overnight Galena, IL
Day 3
3 Grant Wood Studio/Grant Wood Memorial Window/National Czech & Slovak Museum & Library/Brucemore Estate
This morning get an inside look into artist Grant Wood and visit his studio where he painted "American Gothic". Next, see his incredible stained glass Memorial Window which is one of his most revered works and serves as an awe-inspiring memorial to Veterans. At last you'll come to the kolache part of your tour when you visit the National Czech & Slovak Museum and Library. It preserves, presents, and transcends unique stories of Czech and Slovak history and culture through innovative experiences and active engagement to reach cross-cultural audiences locally, nationally, and internationally. A special treat is a Czech buffet lunch; ummm with of course a kolache for desert. Finally, visit Brucemore Estate; a historic 26-acre estate with a 19th-century mansion filled with the stories of three Cedar Rapids families. Enjoy one last dinner with your travel mates at a local popular restaurant.
