Join you Allied friends on a one day journey to New Ulm, Mn. A local expert guide will show you the local attractions and tell you stories about their German Heritage. Sit back, relax and enjoy this fascinating and informative day.
New Ulm was founded by two groups of German immigrants in 1854, both looking to create a "Utopian German Community on the American wilderness." Using the advice of a French fur trader, they sited their town on the natural terraces that occurred near the confluence of the Minnesota and Cottonwood Rivers in south-central Minnesota. It is named after Ulm, a city on the Danube river in south central Germany, and home to the tallest church steeple in the world and birthplace of Albert Einstein. The community still holds on to its German heritage today.
LOCAL TOUR GUIDE
A New Ulm tour guide will be with our group for two hours. This adventure will show us many sites that are related to New Ulm's strong heritage, plus the Dakota Conflict sites, the Cathedral and other places as time allows.
This 102-foot monument towering over New Ulm depicts Hermann the Cherusci, the ancient hero whose army liberated Germany from Roman rule in 9 A.D. As German immigrants came to the United States, the legend of Herman as the father of German independence and a symbol of honor and pride came with them. This 4,000-pound statue was designated by the U.S. Congress in 2000 as a national symbol of German Heritage.
Be inspired by the beautiful 45-foot-tall Glockenspiel's bells at 12 noon. The Glockenspiel houses 37 bells with a total weight of more than two tons. Twelve figurines depicting characters from city's history rotate on a circulating stage during performances.
LUNCH AT KAISERHOFF
Delicious German lunch will be served at the Kaiserhoff. You have a choice of a German plate or Chicken Kiev plus pop, milk or coffee. Elaine will take your order when you board the motorcoach.
A LEGEND WORTH LEARNING ABOUT
Afternoon dessert and coffee will be enjoyed at the Visitor Center. Mounted on the outside wall of the Visitor Center, is a 4-foot casting of Hermann the German's footprint! It is unclear where it came from, but cast right into the base of this artifact are the very words. "Deutsche Haben Mehr Spass" or "Germans Have More Fun." Give the visitor center staff your version of how you think the footprint came into being.
GUIDED TOUR & TASTING AT AUGUST SCHELL BREWING CO
