Aug. 15, 2018

We depart early morning and enjoy the journey to Des Moines.

Your tour director will serve refreshments and provide entertainment along the way.

The Iowa State Fair began in 1854. It is based in the State Capital of Des Moines over 11 days in August. August 15, 2018 is designated as Older Iowans Day. With over a million visitors, it is one of the largest and best known State Fairs in the United States. The Fairgrounds are spread over 450 acres, including 160 acres of campsites. Popular attractions include the Butter Cow (sculpted by Iowan Sarah Pratt) in the Agricultural building, a 10 acre midway and it’s Ferris wheel, one of the world’s largest livestock shows, the country’s largest state fair food departments, (more than 900 classes), the states largest art show and over 600 exhibitors.

A Heritage Village section depicts Iowa life around the time of the Fair’s establishment in 1885. Participate in a church hymn sing and take time to visit a country school, general store, barber shop, telephone company and train depot.

The Varied Industries Building displays new products and designs. The Iowa State Fair Fabric and Threads Department on the second story displays Iowa’s quilts, rugs, dolls and hosts an Annual Sew In.

Enjoy five stages with free entertainment and over 50 choices of foods cooked on a stick. Or try one of these delicious foods: Golded Fry Choco Pocko, The Eastsider Gourmet Burger, Cattleman’s Taco Haystack, or Veggie TotChos. Bring your water bottle and refill at numerous drinking fountains located throughout the fairgrounds. Pause and refresh under many shade trees or in air conditioned buildings. Get a great overview of the fairgrounds by taking a free aerial tram ride. Receive a map of the fairgrounds and a list of activities when our motorcoach arrives in the parking area. Volunteers will board the motorcoach and answer all your questions.

After a full day our group will make a dinner stop enroute home. Then sit back and relax after a fun day at the Iowa State Fair.
