Day 1

Allied Tour & Travel presents: Puppies and Pie

Join your Allied travel friends and enjoy a day of out-of-the-ordinary sightseeing. A local guide will meet our group and be with us all day.

We learned on June 1 that the owner of Marcon Pies is very ill and has decided to close his business. This is a disappointment to us; however, Gloria Moore has stepped forward and is going to make it an exceptional day.

Gloria is the Director of Washington County Travel & Tourism. She has been helpful in reorganizing our day, so we will still have three guided tours and a Mystery Tour Stop. Gloria has agreed to be a step on guide and will be with our group from the time we arrive in Washington at approximately 9:30 a.m. to the time that we depart Washington County around 4 p.m.

Yes, you will still enjoy a delicious noon lunch which includes a three meat buffet including vegetables, salads, rolls, and drinks, plus a slice of homemade pie. Yes, you will still have a guided tour of Kansas Specialty Dog Service and of Herr's Machine Memory Lane. Yes, you will still enjoy a Mystery Tour Stop.

In place of the Marcon Pies visit, Gloria will take our group to Hanover, Kansas to see the Hollenberg Pony Express Station. Although the Pony Express was only in operation for 18 months in 1860 and 1861, it has captured the imagination of generations of people around the world. The State served as both a stop for the Pony Express and a way station for travelers passing through Kansas on the California and Oregon Trails. It is a national historic landmark managed by the Kansas State Historical Society. We are confident that you will enjoy this interesting and educational stop.

Next, we visit the Kansas Specialty Dog Service (KSDS) and see where they train service dogs for the physically handicapped, and guide dogs for the visually impaired. It's fascinating how they train and raise these special animals - from breeding through maturity. KSDS began as Kansas Speciality Dog Service and was incorporated as a non-profit with assistance from the State of Kansas Department of Rehabilitation Services and additional support from individual donors. KSDS has celebrated over 25 years of service and has placed over 500 assistance teams.

This afternoon we visit Herr's Machine Memory Lane in northwest Washington where there are over 100 vintage vehicles and items on display. A guided tour will show you the 50 year plus collection of completely restored cars, tractors, and engines. You will see the progression of transportation, from a buggy, a 1918 Buick race car, early wreckers, and fire and gas trucks. Another building houses many old tractors, oil field engines and farm implements. See the 1930 Garage complete with tools. Compare the 1920's working wind charger to the latest wind turbine.

We will conclude our day with a Mystery Tour Stop!

This tour is includes average physical activity.  You should be in good health, able to climb stairs and walk and reasonable distances.
