Day 1

Allied Tour & Travel Present: Ashfall Fossil Beds, Neligh and Plainview, NE

You are invited to join Allied to experience Ashfall Fossil Beds! Years ago, volcanic ash engulfed this ancient watering hole, entombing innumerable animals. National Geographic has called it the "Pompeii of prehistoric animals." Because of its' scientific importance, the 360 acre historical park between Orchard and Royal was acquired in 1987 and is a joint project to the Game and Parks Commission and the University of Nebraska State Museum. A guided tour will show us where paleontologists continue the discovery, unearthing intact skeletons of barrel-bodied rhinos, three-toed horses, llama-like camels, and saber-toothed deer. Exciting discoveries are unearthed every summer in the new 17, 500 square foot Hubbard Rhino Barn.

En-route to Ashfall, we will have guided tours at the Neligh Mill and the Pierson Wildlife Museum. At the Neligh Mill, we will sift through the story of milling in Nebraska. Discover the amazing process that turned raw wheat into our daily bread. Three floors of chutes, ladders, grinders, and sifters reveal the daily grind, 1880's style.

Next, we visit the Pierson Wildlife Museum Learning Center--an amazing collectionof mounted wildlife. An avid hunter, Dr Pierson collected trophies from South Africa, Zambia, Kenya, Spain, Australia, Slovenia and North America. The first floor exhibit was opened on July 4, 2002 and the lower level was opened in 2003. A committee, made up of several diverse members, took the challenge and has become the "keepers of the vision" for the wildlife exhibit.

Your noon lunch will be at the famous Green Gables Restaurant, known for its delicious home style food and upstairs gift area. Enjoy a Roast Beef dinner with real mashed potatoes and gravy!

Later in the afternoon, you will enjoy guided tours at the Klown Doll Museum and the Plainview Historical Museum in Plainview, NE. The Klown Museum wants you to see and enjoy over 7,000 clowns. The museum has been proclaimed by former Governor Dave Heineman as Nebraska's Klown Kapital. The Plainview Historical Museum is located in the depot built in 1880 by the Fremont, Elkhorn adn Missouri Valley Railroad. The Museim has many antiques including a large wheel bicycle, stoves, dishes, quilts, telephones, a 1917 Edison record player and many photographs. You will enjoy many facinating artifacts and exhibits.

Please note: In order to get to the Rhino Barn, there is some walking down the hill via a paved pathway. The gift area of Green Gables is up on the second level accessed via a flight of stairs. The Neligh Mills has some stairs, especially if you wish to go in the upper level.

This tour includes average physical activity.   You should be in good health, able to climb Stairs and walk reasonable distances.
